Dorm room in Lone Mountain.

Student Housing

What's in a Dorm Room?

What Do the Rooms Look Like?

Please read the information below to prepare yourself for your new on-campus room. Double and single rooms will be the only room types offered during this year. Please refer to your specific residence hall's page for more building specific information.

  • Bed frame and mattress, size twin extra long (dimensions: approximately 80 in. x 36 in. x 6 in.)
  • Desk with drawers
  • Desk chair
  • Built-in heater
  • Dresser or chest of drawers

Closets

Every student will have access to closet or wardrobe space. Closet configurations vary by residence hall, and by room type. Closet doors in Hayes-Healy Hall and Gillson Hall are removed to make better use of space. Curtain rods are provided in their place, so please feel free to bring your own curtain if you want to make it personalized. (The dimensions of the closet opening are 94 in. x 24 in.)

What Should You Bring?

In order to maximize the space in your room, we recommend that you coordinate with your roommates before arriving on campus for larger items listed below, like refrigerators, microwaves, and televisions.

Essentials

  • Bedding (pillow, blanket or comforter, and twin XL sheets)
  • Bath towels, bathrobe, and flip-flops for shower
  • Toiletries and shower caddy
  • Clothes (bring enough for 1-2 semesters)
  • Laundry detergent and a laundry bag or hamper (a collapsible hamper is easiest)
  • Alarm clock
  • Hangers

Conveniences

  • Refrigerator* (one per room, no larger than 3.8 cubic feet)
  • Collegiate Concepts for microfridge rentals
  • Microwave* (one per room)
  • Plate, cups, and utensils (and dish soap to clean them)
  • Television and DVD player
  • Stereo/radio
  • Computer
  • Iron
  • Small vacuum
  • Desk lamps

For a full list of what you’ll find (and won’t find) in the rooms, check out our comprehensive list on myUSF.

Two Notable Items Not in Your Room

  • Telephone line: Most students bring a cell phone. If you would like a telephone line in your room, you must request it from ITS. They will provide the line and the phone, so don't bring a landline phone with you.
  • Air conditioning or fan: It doesn't normally get hot enough in San Francisco to require an air conditioner. If you get hot easily, consider bringing a small desk fan.

Other Good Ideas

  • Painters tape or putty to put up posters and pictures (no tacks or nails)
  • Headphones: If your roommate is studying, you can still listen to music or watch a movie with headphones on
  • Ear plugs and/or sleeping mask: If you're a light sleeper, having ear plugs and a sleeping mask will help you rest better with a roommate in the same room
  • Slippers for walking in the halls or to the lounge
  • Throw rug
  • Attention Hayes-Healy and Gillson residents: Closet doors will be removed in these buildings to make better use of the space. Curtains rods will be provided in their place, however curtains won't be provided, so feel free to bring your own curtain. of the closet opening are 94 in. x 24 in.)

What Not to Bring

Not Allowed

  • No pets or animals (exception: freshwater fish in a tank no larger than 10 gallons are allowed and approved service or emotional support animals)
  • Candles or open flames
  • No electrical appliances, including, but not limited to:
    • Space heaters
    • Sun-lamp
    • Torchiere halogen lamps
    • Ceiling fans
    • Air conditioner
    • Hot plates
    • Anything with an open coil
  • Any gas or electric-powered vehicles or machines, including motorcycles, segways, hoverboards, and all other electric skateboards.
    • Please note: This also includes cars. All on campus residents* are not allowed to bring cars to the university and will not receive on campus parking permits. Please refer to Public Safety for more information.

Not Needed

  • Printer: USF has printers in many locations around campus. For most students, it is easier and cheaper to print on campus printers than to buy a printer and stock toner and paper.
  • Money for laundry machines. All active residents may use washers and dryers for free in all residential facilities!
  • Video games or movies: Most of your time will be spent doing other things, so don't bring more than a couple games or movies.
  • Tools: If you need anything repaired, you can submit a request to the facilities management team.

Kitchen Items

You may bring these items for use in the kitchen, but not in your room.

  • Wok
  • Rice cooker
  • Toaster oven
  • Toaster
  • Coffee maker
  • Similar cooking appliances
