What I’m Doing This Summer: Agrika Maurya ’25

What are you doing this summer?

I'm an audit intern at the Deloitte office in San Francisco. Deloitte’s a consulting firm. They audit other companies. Every intern is assigned to a different company.

Which company were you assigned to?

I worked with the Stitch Fix team for three weeks. Stitch Fix is an online consumer retail company. Now I’m working with KKR [Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.], an investment firm.

What does the audit team at Deloitte do?

We check the company's financial statements, including their income statements and balance sheets. What we basically do is to make sure that whatever they’re presenting to the world — about what the company is and how much they’re earning — is what they’re actually doing.

Highlights?

Deloitte planned a three-day trip for us at Deloitte University in Westlake, Texas, where they send interns and staff for training. During this trip there were auditing, taxing, and consulting interns all there, so there were at least 700 people in the university. I think they were showing us what it’s like to be with Deloitte. It was an amazing experience.

What’s your major?

I'm a double major: business analytics and accounting. I think these two majors nowadays go hand in hand. Even though at first I didn’t know I wanted to add accounting, I realized that San Francisco might be one of the best places for study because all Big Four accounting firms [Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers] are here.

What do you like most about auditing?

Mainly because I didn’t want to do taxes, but also in auditing, you work with more people. If it's a small team, you're going to have at least five people, and big teams are gonna have like 30. We get to work with companies directly, and we do client visits.

How has your USF education inspired you or helped you formulate your skills?

All the professors have been really nice because they talk about personal experiences. They talk about the things they had to go through when they worked for a company, or some of the funny moments in life where they had to do something stupid for a company. It helped me feel like, OK, this is pretty interesting. I do see a career in this. Also, USF has so many events for the School of Management. I remember last semester, they had Donuts for Deloitte and they had EY and PWC come to campus, where the recruiters are there to talk to you. That’s one of the amazing resources that USF provides.

Plans?

It depends. If I get a career offer from Deloitte, then I’ll start working on my CPA license. Otherwise, I’ll probably try to get a secure job and then apply to a master’s program in business analytics. 

Any advice for students?

For people in the School of Management, talk to the recruiters when they come. They’ll be more likely to hire you if they've seen you. For anyone who is a rising senior, I would say even though it’s hard to know what career choices are best to make post-graduation, I think just go for any opportunity available to you. Even if you’re unsure where it might take you, one small step can always lead to something. I was scared to apply to Deloitte. Why would they hire me? But they did, and now I know so many people.
