When the Silk Speaker Series launched in 2017, founders Jeff Silk ’87 and his wife, Naomi Silk, could not have predicted how deeply the program would resonate with the University of San Francisco community.

Nine years later, the series has grown into one of the university’s most visible and consistent platforms for dialogue, connection, and inspiration.

The series debuted with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and has since welcomed 25 influential voices with careers and expertise spanning public service, athletics, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.

Together, these speakers have drawn more than 15,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members to either the War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center or virtual spaces, creating shared moments of learning.

Over the years, the Silk Speaker Series has featured 11 athletes, 10 entrepreneurs and world leaders, and nine actors and entertainers. High-profile guests have included Steph Curry, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Serena Williams, Mindy Kaling, and Steve Kerr.

When we originally started the Silk Speaker Series, we had no idea how successful it would become. It has grown far beyond anything I imagined.”

Former host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah made Silk Speaker Series history as the first speaker to sell out in fewer than 24 hours, while his event and Steve Kerr’s rank among the most highly attended.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the series persisted, offering the USF community a sense of connection and continuity online. Virtual and live-streamed conversations brought internationally recognized leaders into people’s homes, reinforcing the series’ role as a gathering place for ideas and community.

For Jeff and Naomi Silk, whose philanthropy makes the events possible, the experience has been as meaningful as it has been joyful. Giving to USF, they say, has allowed them to witness firsthand the impact of bringing globally recognized voices to campus. Within the USF community, the series encourages curiosity, reflection, and engagement with the wider world.

“When we originally started the Silk Speaker Series, we had no idea how successful it would become,” said Silk. “It has grown far beyond anything I imagined.”

That growth reflects more than attendance numbers. The series has become a shared experience that connects students with alumni, faculty with community members, and campus conversations with global perspectives.

As it enters its ninth year, the series stands as a testament to what sustained partnership and thoughtful philanthropy can make possible — to the power of conversation to bring a community together.
