Hack Sustainability

With that in mind, 10 student teams got to brainstorming for the university’s second annual Sustainability Design Challenge Oct. 7. The teams were required to be interdisciplinary, giving humanities, science, and business majors a chance to collaborate. They came up with proposals for educational campaigns, mobile phone apps, and even physical objects, then pitched their ideas to a panel of judges — including a Silicon Valley investor.

The winners, The Green Team, created a concept for a food container, like a Japanese bento box, that could be distributed to first-year students when they arrive on campus and reused, cutting down on container waste in the cafeteria. They’ll be pitching the idea to USF President Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., later this semester.
