Holiday Spirit Shines at USF With Tree Lighting and Carols
Hear them sing! Students, faculty, and staff celebrated the lighting of USF's Christmas tree on Dec. 1.
The University of San Francisco ushered in the holiday season with hot cocoa, carols, and a prayer for hope and guidance that culminated with the lighting of a two-story Christmas tree outside University Center last night.
"Christmas is my favorite holiday, so having a tree lighting amped me up for the season,” said Mariah Santiago ’18. “The carols and cocoa hit the spot and reminded me of home. I could really feel the Christmas spirit on campus."

Carolers opened the event with ’Tis the Season. The 26-foot tree’s 11,480 lights sprung to life when the choir, comprised of the St. Ignatius Liturgical Ensemble, USF Voices, and faculty, launched into Oh Christmas Tree. About 100 students, faculty, and staff cheered as the lights came on.
Families and friends lined up for photos and selfies, posing in front of the tree. Others enjoyed hot cocoa and cookies, while they relaxed next to Privett Plaza’s outdoor fireplace.
“May the light of this tree remind us that you are Emmanuel, God who is with us — that light present in the love, and compassion, present even in the midst of darkness,” said Associate Director of University Ministry Donal Godfrey, S.J., who offered a blessing. “Guided by your light, help us become people who care for every life and, following our Jesuit mission, fight for racial and social justice for all.”
