The Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good at the University of San Francisco to Participate in KQED’s ‘Night of Ideas’ on March 2
SAN FRANCISCO (February 22, 2024) – The Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good at the University of San Francisco (USF) will be presenting at KQED’s fifth annual ‘Night of Ideas’ on March 2, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. at the San Francisco Public Library in the African American Center on the 3rd Floor. The conversation, titled ‘Cultural Humility and Literacy of Place with The Fillmore’, will be led by the McCarthy Center’s Engage San Francisco and its literacy initiative — a partnership with SFUSD and community-based organizations that has grown into an intentional year-round literacy support project for Western Addition children and their families. Manager Dresden Frazier-Smith, USF alumni Jada Curry, community partner Michael White of Collective Impact, and faculty and collaborators from USF’s School of Education including Onllwyn Dixon, Collette Cann, and Gertrude Jenkins will explore the role of place, cultural humility, and how creating pro-Black spaces can play in literacy education.
“Participants will discuss what kind of environments and relationships are necessary to support Black children and their families in their learning and success, and how these factors are often overlooked when we discuss literacy education,” said Karin Cotterman, director of Engage San Francisco.
KQED’s ‘Night of Ideas’ is a collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library and Villa Albertine San Francisco. The annual all-night takeover of the library’s main branch at Civic Center features talks, panels, workshops, performances, food, art, and collective imagination activities that showcase the Bay Area’s distinctive approach to new ideas, and allow for contemplation of a future for city life that is more just, culturally vibrant, and sustainable. Exploring the theme “Fault Lines: Outside the Lines,” experiences throughout the library will look at the points of rupture and connection, the lines that bound and bridge our world across urban, green and digital spaces – and how we can think outside them.
The evening’s programming begins at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free, but registration is suggested.
