Michelle sits on her bed, sips a warm cup of tea, and thanks God for all her blessings, as the sun begins to set.

Just a few years ago, this scene would have seemed like a distant dream. Once an anxious young woman unsure of her path, Michelle reflects on her journey as a nurse—her calling, identity, and heart's genuine desire.

Her journey began right after high school when she envisioned herself as a psychologist. A chance encounter with a newspaper one afternoon changed everything. Michelle was browsing the jobs section and was struck by the number of listings for nursing positions. “Nursing,” she thought, “could provide stability for my future.” It seemed a practical decision, but little did she know how profoundly it would alter her life.

As a single mother, Michelle knew the challenges that lay ahead. Balancing work and family is always daunting, but nursing allowed her to create a stable home for her children. With each opportunity, her confidence grew, and so did her passion for caring for others.

“Nursing is more than just a profession,” she often told her friends. “It's a commitment and a duty.”

Encouraged by a friend, Michelle pursued a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of San Francisco. She felt a sense of belonging from the moment she started her program. The community and faculty resonated with her values, affirming that she was in the right place. It was a big commitment, but she was not alone.

The early days were tough. Michelle struggled with maintaining professional boundaries, sometimes feeling overwhelmed and unsure. But as time passed, she embraced her role and sought to learn as much as possible.

Early on, she enrolled in various classes, each a stepping stone to her personal and professional development. One class that particularly stood out was environmental health. “It opened my eyes to the world outside our little window,” she explained, realizing the importance of interdisciplinary learning in nursing. Every opportunity became a lesson, and she was eager to absorb it all.

Overcoming obstacles with grace, Michelle transformed her dreams into reality, growing into a skilled nurse known for her unwavering dedication and kindness. Throughout her DNP program, Michelle’s focus sharpened. She was particularly drawn to helping populations impacted by mental health. The experiences she encountered inspired Michelle to envision a future where she could transform lives.

Her culminating DNP project was dedicated to healing young adults. Titled “Leading the School Team: A Professional Development Training on Eating Disorders for School Nurses,” her project aimed to equip over 100 school nurses across 17 districts in a major urban area with the skills to recognize and support students struggling with eating disorders. It was a demanding but rewarding endeavor, and the training would be delivered through a virtual platform, reflecting the adaptability she had learned throughout her career.
