Outstanding Community Partners to be Honored March 9 by the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good at the University of San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (March 1, 2023) – The McCarthy Center at the University of San Francisco (USF) will honor dedicated community partners at its Friendraiser Celebration on Thursday, March 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event, held at the Don Fisher Clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco, is open to the public, and registration is required.

The 2023 Community Partner Award Winners are:

“It’s an absolute honor to shine a positive spotlight on our extraordinary community partners that we work with throughout the year,” said McCarthy Center Senior Director Derick Brown. “The community partners that we will be honoring have gone above and beyond in the San Francisco community and continue to be a beacon of light for the residents that they serve.”

The Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good is dedicated to inspiring and preparing students at USF to pursue lives and careers of ethical public service. The McCarthy Center provides a forum for education, service and research in public policy-making and programs for the common good, supporting undergraduate and graduate academic programs, service learning, and government experiences for students.

“My heart is beyond full to be recognized by USF’s McCarthy Center for this award,” said Change Maker Award winner Silena Layne of Faithful Fools. “As Frederick Douglass said, It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men’. My impoverished childhood, enriched USF education, and incredible work as a Faithful Fool makes it possible for me to work with thousands of children, families, educators and community leaders to ensure there are fewer broken people on the planet when I leave than when I arrived.”

Leo T. McCarthy, Speaker of the Assembly from 1974 to 1980 and Lieutenant Governor of California from 1983 to 1995, was a man of great political wisdom and personal integrity. He began his career in the 1960s as a San Francisco supervisor and was instrumental in establishing the city’s Human Rights Commission and keeping freeways out of Golden Gate Park. He was a champion of people without a voice and those pushed to the margins.
