Stephen Curry Film About USF’s Clarence B. Jones Screens at Sundance
NBA All-Star Stephen Curry has co-produced a documentary about Clarence B. Jones, speechwriter to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and co-founder of the USF Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice.
The Baddest Speechwriter of All, a 29-minute film, will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month. It also was co-directed by Curry, who teamed up with two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot.
Jones, who celebrated his 95th birthday this month, said, "Finally the world recognizes that I am the baddest speechwriter of all."
Curry first met Jones at a June 2020 USF Silk Speaker Series event during a time of protest against racism and police brutality.
“Dr. King said we can’t be quiet until there is no more police brutality and killing,” said Jones in June 2020.
“And here we are today,” he added. “It’s clear to me we have to continue. Whatever achievements we thought we achieved; they were not enough.”
Jones served as lawyer, strategic adviser, speechwriter, and friend to King. In the documentary, Jones “reflects on the personal cost and surprising truths of making history, offering an intimate insider's view of the Civil Rights Movement,” according to the film description.
The festival is Jan. 22 through Feb. 1 in Park City, Utah. Screening times for the film include online options.
