Altar:
In this altar to Yolanda López, created by co-curators Angelica Rodriguez and Rio Yañez, there are a mixture of traditional and contemporary offerings. Objects included are:
Photograph of López with her Uncle Mike (an enlargement from a photobooth strip taken in the early 1960s)
Statue of the Aztec goddess Coatlicue
Political pins, some designed by López
Traditional offerings present in the altar include López’s favorite snack (Fritos), medicine that was used to care for her in the final months of her life, sage, her pocket radio, and some of her tools as an artist.
At the base of the altar is López’s favorite hoodie, emblazoned with the words Women are Perfect, graphic designed by artist Jessica Sabogal
Photos in the altar depict López pregnant, López and René Yañez, comic book artist Spain Rodriguez, López’s Uncle Mike cutting hair in San Diego, López and her grandmother Victoria Franco in San Diego’s Chicano Park, and
