The University of San Francisco established the Data Institute in August 2016 to support cross-disciplinary research and education in the field of data science. As a cutting-edge institute, we have evolved to not only support data science but also to lead initiatives and research in the spheres of data engineering and AI, driving innovation and addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
The Data Institute provides a distinctive fusion of cutting-edge academic research and the entrepreneurial culture of the technology industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, shaping the landscape of AI innovation. It is redefining the traditional arm’s length relationship between industry and academia, fostering collaboration and synergy between the two spheres.
With a proven track record of successful partnerships with organizations such as Airbnb, Eventbrite, Google, Meta, BlackRock, Capital One Labs, Amazon Web Services, Reddit, PG&E, Boston Children’s Hospital, and UCSF, the Data Institute serves as a hub for AI-driven innovation and collaboration.
Through the creation of innovative degree-granting and continuing education programs, and amplified by its Bay Area headquarters, the Data Institute is building the next generation of data scientists equipped with AI expertise. Its flagship graduate program, the Master of Science in Data Science, along with the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and professional certificate programs, have been instrumental in training and preparing numerous individuals to excel in the dynamic field of data science and AI.
In alignment with the distinctive Jesuit character and mission of the University of San Francisco, the Data Institute engages with civic, corporate, and nonprofit organizations to build an extraordinary community of data scientists committed to driving social impact.
