Biography

Stuart McKee is a full professor of Design at the University of San Francisco. As an environmental graphic designer, Stuart designed exhibition typography for the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles; the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland (as Senior Graphic Designer for the Burdick Group); and the United States Pavilion at the 1992 World's Fair in Seville, Spain (as Senior Graphic Designer for Staples & Charles Ltd). As a print designer, Stuart has designed books for the MIT Press, Princeton Architectural Press, Chronicle Books, the University of Hawai‘i Press, and the Office of the Chief Architect. He has received recognition for these projects from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the Professional Association for Design (AIGA), and the Society of Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD).

Stuart is also active as a design researcher and writer. As a collective body of work, his research has examined the ways in which graphic design artifacts have contributed to the cultural and political identities of their makers and users, and informed changing identity patterns throughout the late modern period of Western history. Stuart’s recent book project, Indigenous Enlightenment: Printing and Education in Evangelical Colonialism, 1790–1850, was released by the University of Nebraska Press in December 2023.
