Meet Brandt Kaufmann ’26

Where are you from and what is your background?
I was born in North Carolina, but my family moved to the Washington, D.C. metro area when I was six years old. Growing up in such a diverse and fast-paced region gave me exposure to people and perspectives from all over the world, which helped shape my curiosity and adaptability. I’ve always been drawn to solving problems, whether it was figuring out the fastest way to finish all my chores as a kid or teaching myself how to play a new sport. That sense of curiosity eventually grew into a love for problem-solving through numbers, which is what steered me toward studying data science and statistics. Over time, I developed a strong foundation in programming, machine learning, and math, and I’ve been fortunate to apply those skills in both projects, research, and competitions.
Why did you apply for this graduate program and decide to study at USF?
I was interested in the MSDS program because it gives students a chance to engage with industry professionals, while furthering their education. I felt that I had limited professional experience and going out into the private sector seemed daunting, but being a student in MSDS means that I will have an opportunity to learn from professionals who are there to ensure that I have a chance to succeed in the real world.
What impacts has the Dean's Scholarship had on your ability to further your studies?
The Dean’s Scholarship made it possible for me to continue my education; without it, there is no way I would have been able to pursue graduate school. It gave me the confidence to take this next step without being overwhelmed by the financial burden, and it reinforced that the university believes in my potential. I see my presence here as both an investment in my future and as a responsibility to make the most of the support I’ve been given. This scholarship turned what once felt like an uncertain dream into a concrete path forward.
What are your career ambitions?
My long-term career goal is to become a data scientist who specializes in building models that make a tangible impact. The wide reach of data science means that I could do this in a number of ways. Whether in healthcare, education, or technology, there's good to be done. I’ve always enjoyed using data to find patterns and solve problems, and I want to use that skillset in ways that improve the world.
What is something unique or interesting about you?
In my free time, I like to play video games, and I've been the Captain/IGL of the Valorant team here at USF for 3 years. I've had the chance to play many games I love here at USF, whether that be Valorant, Badminton, Volleyball, or Rugby, I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunities to join amazing teams here.
Are You ELIGIBLE?
The Dean’s Scholarship recognizes a select group of incoming students in graduate programs, who the admission committees believe will make a substantial contribution to the programs. Recipients are selected based on merit. To be considered for the Dean's Scholarship, students must apply to their program by the program's priority deadline.
