Meet Ricky Muira ’25
Where are you from and what is your background?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and later moved to San Diego for my undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, where I earned a BS in Data Science with a minor in Business Economics. During this time, I was first introduced to data science. Seeing how data influences almost every part of our lives, from business decisions to everyday choices, sparked my passion to explore the field further and dive into its endless possibilities.
Why did you apply for this graduate program and decide to study at USF?
With limited industry experience, I believed that the practicum offered by the MS in Data Science at USF would be a valuable opportunity to bridge that gap. The program's hands-on approach seemed like the perfect way to gain real-world experience while simultaneously deepening my knowledge in the classroom. Additionally, studying in the heart of San Francisco — a hub of innovation and technology — felt like the ideal opportunity to connect with professionals who shared my career aspirations and immerse myself in the fast-paced tech world.
What impacts has the Dean's Scholarship had on your ability to further your studies?
Receiving the Dean's Scholarship has had a significant impact on my ability to fully commit to my studies without the constant worry of tuition costs and loans. It has allowed me to focus more on excelling in the classroom and less on financial stress, which has been invaluable for my academic success. Additionally, the scholarship has given me the freedom to truly enjoy my time at USF, participating in campus activities and networking opportunities that have enriched my experience both personally and professionally.
What are your career ambitions?
My career ambition is to create data-driven applications that have a meaningful impact on the world. With the vast amount of data being generated every day, I’m excited by the potential to leverage state-of-the-art techniques to use this data for positive change. I envision using my skills to develop innovative solutions in areas like business strategy, financial services, e-commerce, and customer analytics. The idea of turning raw data into actionable insights that can drive growth, optimize operations, and improve decision-making is what motivates me to push the boundaries of what's possible in data science.
What is something unique or interesting about you?
I grew up with a lot of experience in multiple sports. As a kid, I competed in gymnastics and basketball, and in high school, I picked up tennis. While I never played baseball, I became a big fan of the Padres during my time in San Diego. The growing use of data and analytics in sports, especially baseball, has fueled my passion for the games. Pursuing a career in the sports industry, where I can combine my love for sports with my data science skills, is something I’m definitely open to.
Are You ELIGIBLE?
