Meet Tamara Babic ’26
Where are you from and what is your background?
I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota but I grew up in Belgrade, Serbia, a country in Europe. After finishing high school in Belgrade, I attended Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, where I graduated in 2021 with a BS in Biochemistry and Environmental Science and a minor in Psychology. That same year, I moved to the Bay Area where I got my first job at Dren Bio, and I am currently working as a Research Associate.
Why did you apply for this graduate program and decide to study at USF?
I applied to the Professional Sciences Master's (PSM) in Biotechnology because the program's curriculum focuses on a combination of science, biotechnology and MBA-level business courses. I’m excited to start advanced classes in biology, bioinformatics, and business. Seeing how important biotech is in improving healthcare — from creating new drugs to personalized medicine — has inspired me. I'm excited to contribute to that change. This program will help me grow my skills while continuing to work at my current company.
What impacts has the Dean's Scholarship had on your ability to further your studies?
The Dean's Scholarship has been a huge help in covering my tuition and allowing me to pursue my education at USF. I’m very grateful and honored for this support, as it’s not only helping me further develop my career skills but also deepening my appreciation for my values and commitment to my education.
What are your career ambitions?
I am passionate about helping others and have witnessed the significant impact of biotechnology on people’s lives. I am eager to contribute to such positive change by deepening my knowledge in the field and acquiring the tools needed to make meaningful contributions. I aim to develop a business mindset and eventually start my own biotech company that will make new innovations to help save people's lives.
What is something unique or interesting about you?
I’ve played volleyball for more than 10 years and the sport has taught me invaluable life lessons. It has shown me the importance of never giving up, working hard, staying disciplined, leading by example, being a supportive team member, and adapting to changing situations. Volleyball has significantly shaped who I am today.
Are You ELIGIBLE?
