Presentations

Dellanira Garcia, PhD and David Martinez, PhD – conducted a needs assessment at Camphora Camp in Soledad, CA and presented the initial findings in Spring 2015 at the USF Center for Latino Studies in the Americas (CELASA). Camphora Camp housed approximately 45 families including children of all ages as well as multiple generations and was the original government structure built for the Bracero's program in the 1940's. Their work is grounded in Community Based Participatory principles and is the first step towards building collaboration in health within the community.

The camp is currently undergoing reconstruction and the families residing in Camphora have been uprooted and forced to relocate to other parts of Soledad and neighboring cities for the duration of the construction. The goal of the needs assessment was to gather information on the mental health and general health needs of the Camphora residents during this year of transition and beyond.

Dellanira Garcia, PhD - presented at the Biennial Conference of the National Latino/a Psychological Association (NLPA), measuring sensitivity and specificity in three commonly used depression measures (October 2014).

Courtney Keeler, MS, PhD - presented at the International Health Economics Association World Congress at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland with coauthor Marisa Domino, Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina.  The presentation surrounded the lagged effects of binge drinking and marijuana use on employment outcomes in young adult populations.

Barbara Sattler, DrPH, RN, FAAN - spent ten (10) days in Australia delivering a university-based faculty development workshop at Monash University in Melbourne. Dr. Sattler served as Keynote for the Australian Nursing Association - Victoria annual conference in Melbourne and for the Australian Nursing Association - New South Wales Occupational and Environmental Sustainability Conference in Sydney. She presented on nursing leadership in environmental health as well as in rural communities on health risks of fracking.

Angela Banks, PhD, RN and Courtney Keeler, PhD, MS - received the Teaching Effectiveness Award, presented by the School of Nursing and Health Professions on May 5, 2015.

Candace Campbell, DNP, RN, CNL - Dr. Campbell's article regarding The State of the Nursing Industry which addressed the issues nurses face was featured by WalletHub.

Dru Bhattacharya, JD, MPH, LLM - recipient of the 2014-2015 Early Career Award for Excellence in Public Health Law from the American Public Health Association (APHA) for his contributions in teaching, research, and service by the APHA. The award was presented to Professor Bhattacharya at the APHA Annual Meeting held on November 17, 2014 in New Orleans.

Wanda Borges, PhD, RN, ANP-BC and Marie-Claude Couture, PhD, MSc - received a one-year $46,000 grant from Skoll Foundation to support the promotion of “Flu Near You” through new student orientations, classroom presentations, campus fairs, and events.

William J. Bosl, PhD – teaching a joint Global Health Informatics class with MIT in Spring 2015. Dr. Bosl wrote a chapter for MIT's textbook on Global Health Informatics, Addressing the Global Burden of Neurological, Mental and Substance Use Disorders using Information Technology, which will be published this Spring.

Dr. Bosl will also be sponsoring a Fulbright fellow from Ireland during Summer 2015 to work with him on a mobile application for autism therapy.

Elena Capella, EdD, MSN/MPA, RN, CNL, CPHQ, LNCC – recently interviewed by Huffington Post to discuss how nurses find peace at work.

Marie-Claude Couture, MPH – manuscript on USCF research group, Human papillomavirus knowledge, vaccine acceptance, and vaccine series completion among female entertainment and sex workers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia: the Young Women's Health Study (December 12, 2014), was accepted in the International Journal of STD & AIDS.

Jacklyn Hawkins, MSW, PhD(c) – recipient of the 2014 USF Ethnic Minority Dissertation Fellowship. Ms. Hawkins is in her final year of her doctoral program in social work and sociology at the University of Michigan. She has been teaching in the MS Behavioral Health program and sharing her expertise on how gender and ethnicity impact successful management of chronic diseases. Ms. Hawkins has also been helping develop the curriculum for the new master's degree, supervising students during their fieldwork experience.

Andrew Nguyen, PhD – created a web application with Professor Terence Parr that makes it easy to use data from the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. Dr. Nguyen received a $24,000 software grant from Woopra, Inc. to enable real-time analytics of this web application (November 2014).

Marcianna Nosek, PhD, MPH, CNM, CNL, CWHNP and Elizabeth Cooper, DNP, RN, CNL, CNE – published a paper in Nursing Philosophy entitled: "Nurses, Formerly Incarcerated Adults, and Gadamer: Phronesis and the Socratic Dialectic"; based on the research and education project within USF graduate nursing, MPH students, and formerly incarcerated adults.

Marcianna Nosek, PhD, MPH, CNM, CNL, CWHNP – On April 25, 2015, Dr. Nosek and her students participated in a community event in the San Rafael Canal district, Marin Youth Leaders Summit 2015. The focus of the summit was empower young people, by bringing youth activist groups from Marin and the Bay Area to share their activism and experiences.  Activities included youth-led workshops on: the environment, nutrition, alcohol and drugs, community organizing and gardening. USF SONHP students set-up tables with health topics/information to share with the youth participants.

Susan Penner, DrPH, MN, MPA, RN, CNL – received a Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award, presented at the 39th Annual Service and Merit Awards Ceremony on May 5, 2015.

Susan Prion, EdD, RN, CNE – received the Jane Vincent Corbett Spirit of Collegiality Award, presented by the School of Nursing and Health Professions on May 5, 2015.

Stefan Rowaniak, PhD, RN, MS, FNP and Chenit Ong-Flaherty, DNP, RN, APHN-BC, CNL – Jesuit Foundation Grant Awardees for Open Boundaries: A Community in Dialogue on Transgenderism & the Spectrum of Gender Identity (Spring 2014).
