The Thacher Gallery at the University of San Francisco Presents ‘Become The Monuments That Cannot Fall’
The two-part exhibition features art collective Related Tactics and will be on display from November 19, 2020 through February 14, 2021
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 10, 2020) – The Thacher Gallery at the University of San Francisco (USF) presents Become The Monuments That Cannot Fall, a two-part exhibition featuring art collective Related Tactics, November 19, 2020 through February 14, 2021.
Organized by guest curator Astria Suparak with USF’s Master of Arts in Museum Studies Curatorial Practicum class, Become The Monuments That Cannot Fall includes a newly commissioned art project and the first survey exhibition of Related Tactics.
Beginning November 19, The future now, a site-responsive public art project, will be on view in storefronts along the Third Street corridor in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood, a historic African American neighborhood. The poster series illuminates facets of Black life in the city and explores the state of national politics. Presented in English, Spanish, and Chinese, the posters include historical images, provocative meditations, and calls to action. Participating businesses include markets, restaurants, a hardware store, a tailor, a wine store, community organizations, and other sites, such as The Jazz Room, which has been providing residents with live music and libations since 1962. The titles of the exhibition and event are excerpts from the poetic and rousing messages from the project.
Opening on December 1, 2020, is a web-based survey of the group’s work at the intersection of race and culture, including individual members’ artistic practices.

Related Tactics is a collaboration between Bay Area and Washington, D.C.-based artists and culture workers, Michele Carlson, Weston Teruya, and Nathan Watson, producing creative projects, opportunities, and interventions at the intersection of race and culture. Their projects explore the connections between art, broader social issues, and the public through trans-disciplinary exchanges, making, and dialog.
Guest curator Astria Suparak is an independent curator and artist based in Oakland, California. Her cross-disciplinary projects often address urgent political issues and have been widely acclaimed for their high-level concepts made accessible through a popular culture lens.
