Iklim Uluca’s path to the University of San Francisco’s Master’s Degree in Professional Communication (MAPC) program in 2025 was paved by a broad and varied background in communication. Holding a bachelor's degree in Journalism with a minor in Public Relations and Advertising, alongside an associate's degree in Social Media Management, Iklim initially saw herself as a communication generalist. The turning point arrived with a growing desire to explore the intersection of communication and technology. This aspiration led her to MAPC, particularly attracted by its Technical Communication concentration, a perfect blend of her two key interests.

The world of tech and the proximity of Silicon Valley played a significant role in Iklim’s decision to choose San Francisco. Eager to immerse herself in the tech world while strengthening her communication foundation, she recognized USF’s location as ideal for understanding the changing role of communication in technology. Focusing her university applications solely within California, Iklim felt a strong connection to USF from the start. The support she received during the application process, especially as an international student, further solidified her choice, making her feel valued and supported.

Iklim’s chosen concentration in MAPC is Technical Communication. Building on her diverse background, she sought to acquire new skills within the communication field, with a specific focus on the tech industry. Technical Communication provided this precise opportunity for growth and specialization in a location like Silicon Valley. Her experience at USF proved formative for her ambitions in the tech world. One piece of advice from her Digital Storytelling professor resonated deeply: "A good story doesn't just share information; it makes people feel something." This highlighted the power of emotional connection in communication, a perspective Iklim considers vital across various industries.

Her most memorable project involved a marketing initiative for Spotify in her Digital Marketing class. Initially unfamiliar with marketing, Iklim discovered a new area where she could thrive. Awarded the best marketing project in the class, this experience broadened her understanding of potential career paths. As an e-board member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) San Francisco Chapter, Iklim gained "a unique opportunity to connect with industries at the forefront of innovation." This involvement allowed her to network with industry professionals and collaborate with talented peers, an experience she found invaluable.

What Iklim appreciates most about USF is its San Francisco location, a "unique place to connect with diverse industries and cultures." She values the experienced professors who bring real-world insights to their engaging and practical classes. This combination of location, knowledgeable faculty, and hands-on learning made USF an inspiring environment for both academic and professional growth.

Looking to the future, Iklim is excited to apply her USF learning to projects in areas like UX design, content creation, and digital communication. Her Master’s degree has provided a strong foundation in technical communication and storytelling, equipping her with the skills and confidence to pursue roles in her areas of passion. The hands-on learning and real-world insights gained at USF have allowed her to work on projects that directly with her career goals. Her time at USF helped Iklim create new opportunities for herself by providing the skills, connections, and confidence to pursue a fulfilling career in the dynamic tech and communication sectors.
