USF Innovation Hive Recognized with Award

by Garrett Starr, Office of Development Communications

The donor-funded USF Innovation Hive has received an award for its architectural design and the emphasis it places on preparing students for the future.

The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco (AIASF) recently recognized the USF Innovation Hive with a Citation Award in the category of Interior Architecture.

Dubbed “the Bay Area’s hub for architecture and design,” AIASF is one of the largest AIA chapters in the country, and has represented the architecture industry in the region for over 140 years.

In bestowing the award, the institute highlighted how the space keeps pace with the contemporary evolution of science learning at the university level, helps train USF students to meet the challenges of today, and encourages collaboration across disciplines.

On behalf of the Innovation Hive, Sean Olson, director of laboratories, said, “We’re really excited to see this space getting recognized — it’s a great example of how USF is helping students build the kinds of skills they’ll need in today’s job market. The Innovation Hive encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and functions a lot like a real-world R&D center. It supports everything from hands-on prototyping to coding, and it's opened up new ways for teams to work together that just weren’t possible before.”

The Innovation Hive opened in 2021 and features a light fabrication and maker space, a heavy fabrication and testing space, an ideation space for brainstorming and dreaming up solutions, electronics classrooms, science labs, and research spaces shared by multiple programs.

The Hive, made possible by over $6 million in generous gifts by many donors, is open to any student, faculty, staff, or community member who wishes to receive training or has an idea or interest to explore.
