USF Receives Historic $5 Million Pledge to Support Athletics

The pledge, by Board of Trustees Chairman Tom Malloy ’61 and his wife Sharon, will support planned athletic facilities improvements to transform War Memorial Gymnasium and Benedetti Baseball Diamond.

Athletics Director Scott Sidwell called the pledge “extraordinary”and said it will allow Athletics to continue to aim higher in its quest to provide students with the chance to excel in the classroom, win at the highest levels of competition, engage in the community, and become future leaders.

“This gift is a reflection of the tremendous vision and passion that Tom and Sharon have for USF,” said USF President Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. “They understand the role that athletics has played in building USF’s spirit and our reputation for excellence. We are grateful for their commitment to USF and for their leadership in creating a model of philanthropy for others.”

“This gift is a demonstration of my commitment to a university that has made a huge difference in my life, in my son’s life, and in my granddaughter’s life,” said Malloy. “I’m very proud to be a USF alumnus. Sharon and I are extremely pleased to support an effort that we know will change the lives of students for generations to come.”

A history of leadership & support

The Malloys’ philanthropic leadership goes back years and includes support for the construction of the School of Management’s Malloy Hall and the John Lo Schiavo, S.J. Center for Science and Innovation as well as student scholarships, said Peter Wilch, vice president of development.

Tom joined his father’s small underground construction business after graduating with a finance degree. He grew the business, establishing the Tom Malloy Corporation, now Trench Shoring Company, as a general engineering contractor.

Their son Kevin graduated from USF in 1985 and, like his parents, has been a generous donor to the university. In May 2013, their granddaughter Brenna joined the ranks of USF alumni.
