Whimsical Illustrations and Fragrant Cooking from the Philippines
On Oct 20, the Center hosted a sold out screening of the film Starry Starry Night followed by a Q&A with Jimmy Liao – beloved children’s book illustrator and author from Taiwan. Jimmy’s short and sweet story follows a lonely young girl who keeps to herself. She can’t share her thoughts with anyone, until the day she meets a boy as isolated and lonely as her. They escape together from home to look for the missing part of themselves. Attendees were taken on magical tour of the book, page by page, as told through Liao and his bold illustrations.
In honor of Philippine Heritage Month, the Center brought together Dawn Mabalon and PJ Quesada to discuss the histories of Filipino food and how Filipina/o Americans are educating a broader public on Philippine cuisine. Guests were treated to a sampling of arroz caldo and tocino buns provided by FOB Kitchen.
