From PR in Brazil to Senior Product Manager at PayPal, discover how Lorena Moreira, MAPC ’20, shaped her career by tailoring her studies at USF. Her journey highlights the power of adaptable education and strategic networking.

Before stepping into the world of strategic communication at USF’s Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) program, Lorena had already built a solid foundation in communication. With an undergraduate degree in Communications and a minor in Advertising/Public Relations from Brazil, she gained practical experience in content creation and public relations, notably in the music and entertainment industries. However, Lorena sought more. She desired a deeper dive into corporate and strategic communications, combined with the experience of studying abroad. USF’s MAPC program, with its adaptable curriculum and focus on inclusion, proved to be the perfect fit.
Indeed, for international students seeking a blend of adaptable education and practical cross-cultural experience, USF's MAPC program offers an ideal environment. Lorena found the program's flexibility allowed her to tailor her studies to her career aspirations, while the inclusive atmosphere fostered a strong sense of belonging. Notably, the Cross-Cultural Communication class provided hands-on experience, emphasizing that effective communication extends beyond mere translation, requiring a deep understanding of localization and cultural nuances. This combination of personalized learning and real-world application makes MAPC a valuable platform for international students to thrive.
San Francisco’s vibrant atmosphere and the MAPC program’s strategic location provided Lorena with invaluable networking opportunities, crucial for any international student. The program’s flexible structure, with evening classes, allowed her to work while studying, further enhancing her professional experience. “Being in San Francisco also opens up a lot of networking opportunities, so you’re in a great position to make connections,” Lorena notes. The program’s ability to tailor coursework, including diverse electives across strategic, health, and technical communication, enabled her to build a versatile skill set. This flexibility proved essential in her journey to becoming a Senior Product Manager at PayPal, where she initially interned through a MAPC faculty recommendation.

Beyond the academic curriculum, the people Lorena met at MAPC significantly shaped her career. She emphasizes the supportive faculty and staff, particularly David Ryan, who guided her through her capstone project. The international student community provided a sense of belonging, and Lorena actively participated in orientation and events, fostering connections. “The international student community was also one of the highlights of my time at USF — there was so much support, and it made me feel really connected with the campus community,” she recalls. Notably, her friendship with the then-Program Assistant, became a cornerstone of her support system. These connections, combined with the program’s hands-on approach and ethical focus on communication, empowered Lorena to navigate her professional path successfully. She remains connected with her classmates, highlighting the enduring bonds forged at MAPC, and encourages prospective students to leverage the program's flexibility and supportive environment to achieve their career aspirations.
