Where Academic Theory Meets Practice

Jody Privette Young, a seasoned PR and strategic marketing executive, recognized the ever-evolving nature of her field. To stay ahead of the curve, she sought to enhance her expertise through academic study. This led her to pursue the Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) program at the University of San Francisco (USF).
Driven by a desire to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and real-world application, Jody was particularly drawn to USF's flexible approach. The program integrated academic rigor while fostering practical insights and providing a well-rounded learning experience. The flexibility of the evening courses proved invaluable, allowing Jody to balance her professional commitments with academic pursuits. Furthermore, the emphasis on in-person learning promoted valuable peer-to-peer multicultural interaction and facilitated engagement with renowned faculty members, including Dr. David Ryan and Dr. Ted Matula.
Jody's professional journey has been significantly shaped by the rapid advancements in technology and the democratization of information dissemination. The rise of social media platforms, coupled with the widespread adoption of smartphones, has fundamentally altered the communication landscape. Recognizing these transformative shifts, Jody sought to understand how these technological advancements impact communication strategies so that organizations can effectively navigate this evolving terrain.
The MAPC program's strategic communications concentration aligned with Jody's professional goals and academic interests. Jody’s goal was to bridge the gap between traditional communication practices and modern technological shift. "Strategic Communications is an ever-evolving field," she explains. "The birth of the first iPhone and Android smartphones in the late 2000s, and the introduction of high-speed internet access, combined with new social media platforms' incredibly fast adoption, meant an organization's stakeholders were empowered to impact your brand as much as any mass media outlet. It's the era of influencers."
By delving into leadership theory and communication frameworks, Jody deepened her insights into effective communication strategy. This knowledge has proven valuable in her current role as a senior director of marketing and communications for a leading global entertainment technology company.
Within the program, Jody engaged with a diverse range of communication theories, including Chomsky's universal grammar, Hall's model of high-context and low-context cultures, and Aristotelian rhetoric. These theoretical frameworks provide a robust foundation for understanding the nuances of communication across different cultural contexts and developing persuasive communication strategies. This enriched theoretical understanding, combined with her extensive professional experience, has significantly enhanced her leadership confidence and equipped her to navigate the complexities of international partnerships with greater effectiveness.
Reflecting on her experience, Jody encourages professionals considering the MAPC program: "Do it! It's an enriching journey that will undoubtedly enhance both your personal and professional growth. If you're passionate about professional communication and desire a deeper understanding of contemporary marketing and PR theory, this program will provide you with the tools and knowledge to excel in your career and make a significant impact."
Jody's success story exemplifies the USF MAPC program's ability to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. By equipping students with the tools and insights to navigate the evolving communication landscape, the program empowers graduates to become leaders in their field and contribute meaningfully to the world.
Jody’s experience is a testament to our university’s slogan. USF: Change the world from here!
