Program Overview
Whether you choose to make English your principal area of study or your secondary focus, explore three unique concentrations within our major and minor coursework.
Tailor Your Studies
As an English major at USF, you can choose from four concentrations, each designed to expand your writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Literature Concentration
Study American and British fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Sharpen your critical thinking through discussion seminars and lectures. Take courses on the traditions, movements, and influences that have inspired and challenged writers throughout history.
Writing Concentration
Hone your creative fiction, nonfiction, and poetry skills — and specialize in one or two of the genres. Learn about writing form the inside out through workshops and seminars. Become both an informed reader and an effective writer of literary texts.
Comparative Literature & Culture Concentration
Examine writing traditions and trends from around the globe. Learn to think, read, and analyze the world in more than one language. Study and compare art, language, and cultures. Partake in a study abroad program of your choice.
Honors Track
Complete an additional 12 units, or 3 courses, beyond the English major requirements. Then, write an honors thesis that incorporates both creative and critical components. As an honors student, access more course options, academic rigor, and extracurricular opportunities.
Senior Seminar Project
Complete a senior seminar project during your final semester as an English major. Produce a major written work and present it publicly at a year-end symposium. Showcase the skills you've gained at USF and demonstrate your readiness for a variety of careers and graduate programs.
